Overview

Volunteers get the opportunity to live and work directly in a Shuar community in Morona Santiago. You will get to know the daily life of an indigenous tribe from the Amazon Rainforest and learn about their culture. Experience life in the southern Amazon Rainforest that few get the opportunity to see.

Volunteer Responsibilities

During the week volunteers will be teaching English in the afternoon to the Shuar children of the community and any adults who would like to join.

Requirements

  • Minimum stay for volunteering is one week.
  • Volunteers need to be at least 18 years to participate, unless accompanied by a relative.
  • Spanish is required. However, you do not have to be fluent to volunteer in the Shuar community.

Program Fee

The program fee is 130 USD per week.

Included in Program

Lodging in a private room of a host family and 3 meals per day.

Location and Free Time Activities

Limón is the capital of the canton Limón Indanza in the province of Morona Santiago. The Shuar community can be reached by bus from Cuenca in about 4 hours. In their free time volunteers can go hiking in the nearby jungle and swimming in the rivers and waterfalls around the community. During weekends you can visit the city of Limón, where volunteers have access to internet and stores. Arutam Ecotours can also organize whitewater rafting, canyoning, tubing, and trips to other parts of the Amazon Rainforest in Morona Santiago.
