Volunteers get the opportunity to live and work directly in a Cañari community in the southern Andes region of Ecuador. You will get to know the daily life of the indigenous Cañari and learn about their culture. Experience life in the sierra that few get the opportunity to see.

Volunteer Responsibilities

During the week volunteers will be teaching English to the Cañari adults and children of the community and help with daily activities like weeding in the corn fields.

  • Minimum stay for volunteering is one week.
  • Volunteers need to be at least 18 years to participate, unless accompanied by a relative.
  • Spanish is required. However, you do not have to be fluent to volunteer in the Cañari community.

Program Fee

The program fee is 130 USD per week.

Included in Program

Lodging in a private room and 3 meals per day.

Location and Free Time Activities

Cuenca is the capital of the province Azuay, and the Cañari community is located about half an hour from Cuenca. In their free time volunteers can learn Quechua, go hiking in mountains and on the nearby Inca trail. During weekends you can visit Cuenca, where volunteers have access to internet and stores. Arutam Ecotours can also organize day trips to Cajas National Park, Ingapirca, the nearby Inca ruins, or trips to the Amazon Rainforest.
