Siona Lodge

Cuyabeno3 Siona LodgeThe Siona Lodge has a privileged location directly on the Laguna Grande in the Cuyabeno Reserve, allowing for views of impressive sunsets across the large freshwater lake and some rare opportunities to view wildlife.

First day: The pick-up is at the airport in Lago Agrio at 9:50 am or at 9 am at the Hotel Maito Landia, and then you will be transferred to the Cuyabeno Bridge, the entrance of the Cuyabeno Nature Reserve. On the way you will have a box-lunch. From there you will go by motorized canoe for about 2 hours to get to the Siona Lodge at the Laguna Grande. If you are lucky you’ll see monkeys, toucans, parrots, and definitely the great vegetation of the Amazon rainforest. Upon arrival to the Siona Lodge the crew will welcome you. In the evening you can go on your first excursion to observe reptiles and amphibians, after which dinner will be ready.

Second day: After breakfast you will go on a jungle hike for about 3 to 5 hours and see the abundant flora, different eco-systems and medicinal plants. After lunch you will go “eco-fishing”, or catch and release fishing. Look out for pink dolphins around the lagoon and enjoy the sunset in the middle of the lagoon — swimming encouraged, but not required! At night you will have dinner.

Third day: After breakfast, you head out to Puerto Bolivar, the center of the indigenous Siona community. On your canoe trip down the river you can admire the fauna along the shore of the river Cuyabeno. In the community you will learn more about the customs and traditions and will have the opportunity watch the preparation of casave (yucca flat bread) and can taste it as well! After that you will visit a shaman in typical attire in his house and can watch a presentation of his healing rituals. In the afternoon you will paddle with canoes in the lake to look out for the wide variety of birds. After dinner you go on a night trip to watch out for caimans.

Fourth day: You have to get up really early to do some birdwatching before breakfast, as this is the time when the birds are very active. You return to the lodge for breakfast and packing up your things, and then you go back to the bridge by canoe and then with car back to Lago Agrio where the tour ends. OR If you stay on for a fifth day, then instead you will bird-watch in Canangueno Lagoon, reached by indian paddle canoe, and go on another forest hike.

Fifth day: You have to get up really early to do some birdwatching before breakfast, as this is the time when the birds are very active. You will return to the lodge for breakfast and packing up your things, and then go back to the bridge by canoe and with car back to Lago Agrio, where the tour will end.

Note: The itinerary is subject to change because of climate or suggestions of the guide. The observation of birds and animals in general depends on weather conditions.
