Climbing Cotopaxi and Chimborazo

cotopaxiIn these 5 days we will climb the two most impressive mountains of Ecuador, the Cotopaxi (to the refuge at 4800 m) and Chimborazo (6310 m). A previous acclimatization is important to reach the peak of the Chimborazo. We therefore recommend to come a few days earlier to get used to the altitude, or to acclimatize already at your home country.

Day 1: Arrival in Quito (2800 m), Ecuador’s capital. We pick you up from the airport and bring you to your hotel.

Day 2 (B/L/D): After breakfast we drive to the Cotopaxi National Park. With 5897 m the Cotopaxi is one of the highest active volcanos on earth. Due to the current activity, the volcano can not be climbed up to the peak right now. For acclimatization we go on an 3-hour hike to the refuge at 4800 m and back to the parking lot. Then we continue south on the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” to Riobamba.

Day 3 (B/L/D): This morning we go on to the Chimborazo (6310 m). The majesty of Ecuadors volcanoes has long been considered the highest mountain in the world. We reach the refuge Hermanos Carrel (4800 m) after about 1 hour. With packed backpacks we ascend slowly to the Whymper refuge (5000 m). After lunch at 6 pm, we are having a final check before the climb. At 11 pm we set off to the summit of the Chimborazo.

Day 4  (B): The rather steep climb to the summit can take up to 7 hours. Depending on weather conditions we remain up to half an hour on the peak. Enjoy an unforgettable view over the mountains of Ecuador. Then we descent around five hours back to the refuge Hermanos Carrel and return to Quito.

Day 5 (B): After breakfast you will be transfered to the airport or go a connecting tour to the Amazon Rainforest or the Galapagos Islands.
